Our Story
Batavia Home was founded by four sisters who share a vision to introduce their native country, Indonesia and its wealth of culture to the United States. After years of hard work and with the support of family and friends, Batavia Home opened its doors in May 2004 in Summit, New Jersey.
What is Batavia? Historically, Jakarta, the capitol city of Indonesia, was known as Batavia during the Dutch colonial period (late 16th to 19th century). Throughout this time, fusion of classic European design, Chinese traditions and Indonesia's own traditional artistry inspired much of the culture and decorative arts in Indonesia. We at Batavia Home embrace this eclectic blend of aesthetic grace.
Our Collections: A Harmony of Original Beauty, Fine Craftsmanship, and Eclectic Sophistication
Original Beauty
Batavia Home furniture collection is an interpretation of traditional Southeast Asian artistry fused with timeless 19th century European classic designs. Many of these pieces are designed exclusively for Batavia Home, ensuring an original and distinctive look that will last a lifetime.
Fine Craftsmanship
We take pride in providing only the finest quality furniture, hand-made by the most skilled artisans, whose techniques and skills have been passed down through the generations.
Our furniture collection is carefully finished using a traditional hand-finishing method: sanded, stained, and polished many times to achieve an antique glow and rich patina finish that enhances the natural beauty of the wood.
Eclectic Sophistication
As the years progressed, we keep on evolving and adding to our collections beautiful items from different parts of the world. Our love for unique designs and various cultures always enlightens us to create eclectic yet inspiring collections.
At Batavia Home, you will find delicately carved teak furniture from Java, modern upholstery collections from Montreal, exquisite silks from Bali, unique salad servers from the Philippines, gorgeous light fixtures from India, and many other interesting home accessories from around the world.
Batavia Coffee and Confections
Working in the store over the years made us realize how much in common we are with our customers…we are very much in love with coffee and teas. We drink coffees and teas as much as we drink water. Just like wine, there is a real difference in good quality coffee beans and tea leaves versus common products in the market out there. So after doing extensive research, we decided to carry George Howell's Terroir Coffee and Rishi Tea. Caring for Our Environment
Batavia Home strongly believes in preserving the earth's natural resources. We use reclaimed teak wood for most of our furniture collection. Reclaimed teak is wood that has been recycled from old doors, pillars, and walls with many pieces dating back to the 19th century. This rich teak material is durable and provides a unique natural look that enhances Batavia Home's distinctive designs.
For its outdoor furniture collection, Batavia Home utilizes only the highest grade of Indonesian plantation teak wood. These teak plantations are strictly controlled and managed to ensure its continuing existence for our future generations.
Fair Trade
As we grow our business throughout the years, we established strong relationships and became good friends with our vendors. We insist only to work with small businesses that honor fair living wages and safe working conditions for their employees. We do our part by honoring fair prices and fair trade practices. These practices promotes better living conditions and benefits their community as well as the environment through improved health care, education, business, and farming systems.
